Trying to get a computer ready for resale at charitable thrift shop. Believe it has Win 98 or ME operating system but cannot get to it since it asks for password. Tried booting from floppy and CD but bios must be set up for searching Hard drive first. We just want to get it running and can't even get to a point of formatting and installing new OS. Any ideas?

On the motherboard, there should be a pin setting that clears the BIOS, including the password. You need to move the jumper to that setting when the PC is off, power it on for like 5 seconds, turn it off, move the jumper back, and then you can get into the PC.

If the reason you wan tto get it running is to protect your identity, then you could just swap out the hard drive. you said you were going to install a new OS anyway, so it might not be a bad idea. you could get hard drives for just about nothing rihgt now. check out newegg.com. all you would need is like a 60GB or so if oyu are giving ti away, and they can be had for less than $50. open up the case and replace the harddrive with a ew one, then install the new OS.

you could try getting into the BIOS by pressing F8 or Delete right as soon as you turn it on. keep pressing it till it gets to th ewindows boot screen. you should cause any problems by repeatedly pressing those buttons during boot. of course, your computer might not follow the standard buttons, so F8 and DEL might not work for you.

I take it that the BIOS has a password and you aren't referring to the Windows login password (although MS Windows 9x/ME is more of a joke than a real password system). What you'll want to do is pull up the specifications on your system for resetting the BIOS to the factory default. Likely you'll find a jumper on the board that will clear it.
