All notebooks come with DVD burners. The NEC says 4X whilst the ACER 4233 says 2X. What does this mean?

any help would be aprciated greatley.

I do alot of typing for my job at the moment and im constantly having to click the mouse to highlight, copy and paste a word.

I know there are certain keys on the keyboard you can press to do this instead of using the mouse.

Any ideas what they are?

So yesterday I reinstalled everything on my computer with a disk "Windows XP" so it deleted everything. So now, my speakers aren`t working. Like sound ain`t coming out. I can`t change my screen resolution, it stays 640x480 pixels. and the color quality stays Medium (16 bit)

My speakers on my PC wont play any sound aside from system sounds.I have the correct drivers. my problem is that my speakers are not showing up in my sound and audio devices.
i dont think my sound card is out, because i can still hear system sounds. so does anyone know what is wrong, and what i can do to fix this?

What from your experience is the best matched component set for a new Intel-based desktop or tower based PC, and why? I'll need to get a hold of a new CPU / Motherboard / Memory / Hardisk and want the best modern components, but at a part-way sensible price.

(I don't want to get a branded machine coz I enjoy the challenge of building my own machine).

Will there be any difference in performance if I will run ATI 1900GT in PCI-E 8X mode vs 16X? I dont really think there will be any difference at all but I want to be sure. I am looking for cheap motherboard and I found one but its PCI-E slot runs in 8X mode. I will be using this with AMD 64 X2 3800+ CPU.

I'm building a new system and have been out of the loop for a few years as far as hardware quality and performance. I just need the guts as are below. The system doesn't have to be amazing, but I want to be able to push it with some heavy 3D games and Photoshopping now and then. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'd like to spend around a grand. I have a 40 gig drive which was previously used and partitioned into two drives. My problem is that when you look at the capacity of the two drives in Disk Management, it only adds up to 34 gigs. I ran FDISK and it also said that the partitions only added up to 34 gigs. I ran PC Doctor and it passed all tests, so it's not like there are damaged sectors. I tried quick and long formats in both NTFS and FAT32. I'm at a loss as to explain the missing 6 gigs or get them back as useable.

My laptop is plugged in all the time, but it randomly has started dropping to 5% power. I have been unplugging and plugging it back in until it reads 100% power again, but I don't know what's causing it. I am running Windows XP Professional on this machine, and it is four years old. It has been suggested to me that it may be a battery issue, so I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem before. Is it an age problem, or is it overheating, etc.?
