The motherboard is the heart of a computer. Its soul is the CPU. The motherboard provides an interface between the CPU and the computer peripherals, such as the storage media (hard drive, CD drive, Floppy drive, USB drive, etc), the memory (DIMM, SIMM, etc), the monitor, the keyboard and mouse, etc. Without the motherboard, a CPU might as well be a brick.
The motherboard is responsible for moving data from one peripheral to another and the CPU, and controlling the flow of data.

The motherboard is the one thing that interconects everything . Usually more expensive motherboards don't provide better performance (ego conections can't get much better) but they do provide better features of controlling this conections.
