I would probably mention what you currently have at the moment, but since you mentioned your system is 8 yrs old which pretty much means you will probably need just about new everything.

People probably will give you kudos (I am) that you have been running the same system for the past 8 yrs. I think I have upgraded my system probably 10 to 15 times since then

What you will need to buy:

Motherboard (Good brand is Asus) w/ pci express

CPU (Intel or Amd dual core. At the moment Intel is faster)

CPU Fan (if you buy a retail cpu, then this should come with it)

Hard Drive (buy the biggest you can afford, you cannot have to much disk space. Largest is 750 gigs which I believe is around $200-$260

Dvd Burner

Probably at least 2 gigs of DDR 2 ram (I would probably purchase the fastest the board can handle)

A decent PCI Exp video card

Last depending on how old your monitor is, probably a new LCD monitor

Overall buy the most you can afford. A lot of the times, for stuff the price difference isn't that much on memory or hard drive space from one size to the next. For example, a 300 gig hd might cost $70.00 but for an extra $10.00 you can get a 400 gig.

have a look in your local buy and sell or local computer shop that sells used machines for a better used computer if you're on a tight budget. before you start on your own computer with noooo experience. it can be, time consuming, aggravating and mistakes can be expensive. I build them everyday and the for less than the cost of parts, and time spent, you can usually buy a decent used machine and be up and running as soon as you get it home.hope this helps..R.

First guy left out a few things. Case and power supply, as well as an Operating System, computer is not much good with no OS. Also a sound card if you like sound and will not be satisfied with onboard audio.
