An optical drive is a drive that uses a laser (optical device) to both read and or write data. The best example is your CD drive.

Yes.. your CD drive and DVD drives are optical drives. Basically optical drive is a mean to read with optics. CD or DVD drive works on same principal. It works on principal of laser on falls and pits.
Drive throws laser shadows to disk and depending upon pit/fall it reads 0s or 1s. That is how digital data is retrieved by drives from disks. Now it is absolutely up to upper layer that decides how to use this digital data. If you are interested, you can use following source!!
