Anytime we play a movie or larger video game our comp freezes up. Can't use Esc or Ctrl, Alt, Delete. We thought it was the video card so we went and got a brand new one, which should easily run anything we ever use, but it's still freezing. I'm being told our RAM is probably not running fast enough?? Any suggestions? I'm tired of playing FFXI on the PS2!!!

I have purchased my dream computer for a whopping Rs.60,000 [apprx. £770]. I have installed a RAM of 1GB capacity after I was told a high capacity RAM improved PC performance, especially if the PC involved high-end gaming. I thought I could play loads of games and hence went for 1GB RAM.

However, being a novice in computing, I haven't been able to find signs of improved PC performance for the sake of self satisfaction. Could anyone help and explain to me where to look for changes with a 1GB RAM ?

PS: No funny answers please.

From the computer being COMPLETELY off, when I hit the power button the power light never turns green. It stays orange (which is the color of Standby Mode - for a Gateway). The fans work, the CD drives flash their lights, but the keyboard/mouse/monitor don't register because the computer isn't really "on". Does anyone have a fix for this? Does anyone have an idea what this could be? I have made NO memory/device/driver changes in the last year. I would love to know how to turn the computer on - is there a "manual" powerup option?

Thanks for any help!

I have a P2 266MHZ desktop, 64mb ram(2 x 32 mb). I wish to upgrade to 128 or 256mb. But how to tell what ram am i using? PC100 or PC133 eg? Or can i totally replace with a 256mb PC133ram and throw away the 64mb. Will it cause any system crash if different rams are installed. Thank you!

I have a dvd writer already installed in my PC... and i also have a spare cd writer lying with me.. i wanna install that too... well, i can easily fix it in but there's no extra IDE on the motherboard (there are two, one for the floppy and the other one is the primary...) I have a SATA hard drive so the dvd writer is connected to the primary.... but i see there's an ide port on the bus cable of the dvd writer... can i connect to that? and if i can then would i have to change setting (master/slave etc setting) on the cd writer.......

It seems that normal everyday functions that I do on my computer for example, I had powerDVD installed on my computer at the factory when the computer was specially built and I used it for one year and then suddenly without warning it doesn't work anymore, I even tried downloading a newer version of it and after two days that didn't work anymore either. That's just one of many, many things that go on with my computer. It's so fustrating.

When I'm working on it, it becomes really slow for about 8-10 seconds and becomes all right again. it happens every 10-15 minutes.
I scanned for spyware and viruses, but my system's clean.

I asked the question earlier but when I'm replacing the hard drive by just cloning the old hard drive to a new one, (not reloading Windows, not formatting a new drive), will I get rid of the SMART message at startup? Basically, will it also copy over to the new drive the memory to display the SMART message when I clone the drive? How does it know I have a new drive in it since it's an exact copy of the old drive? Does it detect that the drive has been disconnected?

I have an HP computer, about 3 yrs old. It has 2 CD drives (one recordable). Suddenly they didn't work. I checked Device Manager, they are both listed, but both say it can't load the drivers. I have deleted and reinstalled the drives with the same result. I subscribed to a service that keeps drivers up to date. It says the drivers are fine for both drives. Are both drives bad or is it really a problem with the drivers?

I recently have had my laptop completely cleaned up due to a virus. I belive this involved removing all software including XP and reinstating it. Prior to this I had no problem with my USB ports. My ipod updated in seconds and all other devises connected through USB were also fine. However since it has come back from being repaired, I get a messge when a USB such as my ipod is connected saying that a high speed device has been connected to a low speed USB port. It can now take up to 45 minutes to update a 1Gb amount of files. Under 'hardware' and 'device manager' the USB controllers do not say USB 2.0. Is it possible that the guys who repaired the laptop have done somethign to effect this?
