I love your question - it is important to carry out safety check on your system periodically because computers are like small children you never know what is wrong with them, one moment they are functioning fine while within a split second they can change dramatically.Though it is important to check your hardware for any untidiness, loose bolts and nuts,e.t.c,also remember it is dangerous to open your system if you are not capable. The most important things to bear in mind are - keeping the sockets, plugs monitor, system and other electrical aspect of your system free from dirt's,water, create enough space for air flow. Finally always switch off your computer before going to bed or leaving home.

Safety checks? Not important at all; computers are not really a safety hazard.

If you are so inclined, you may wish to periodically check your hardware to see if it needs some maintenence (such as locking down loose wires, or screwing in a fan or hard drive thats come loose).

But other than a bad power supply, there is no reason to perform "safety checks" on your hardware.

I reckon you have been "visited" by a PAT test scam.
This is to do with have all appliances being certified as safe. Now you can do this yourself, and in fact when the law was bought in it was to be self done. OK unplug the appliance, check the lead for cuts, abrasions and breaks. If you can see any pretty colors through the outer then the lead needs replacing. Check the plug, make sure the cord clamp is secure and that if the plug is fused that you have the right size in it, at that time also check the connections in the plug if you had to take the top off. Make sure that the plug is sound again and that there are no floppy or broken bits and there you are, £3.00 for that inspection.
No electronic hi volt tests should be done on any appliance with electronics in it. These days practically everything!!!

It's not most important, but the occasional check is safe. Dust inside your case can be a minor hazard, but you can use a vacum to suck that out with no issue.
