I use my work computer for everything and need to get a home one. I need to know which one to get. All I want to do is surf the web, e-mail, burn cds/dvds, etc. Very basic stuff. Whci is the best brand? Also, what do I want a laptop or desktop?

Used to be notebooks were expensive so buying a desktop was the way to go. Now that prices have come down and notebook sales have outstripped desktops..... get a notebook. You can add speakers, a mouse and all of that and if you do want to take it with you, say vacation and such you can. Move or something, easy to do. A computer is a personal thing and it is nice to be able to take all of your stuff with you. Coffee shops, hotels and many cities offer wireless login. A $60 box at home and you can work on the internet anywhere in the house. The traditional desktop is going away for this reason. If you can have all of the stuff why be tied to a desk?

Some will say buy online to save money. This is simply not true. Look at the ads in the Sunday paper for a retailer near you like Best Buy. You will get a better deal. Plus if you buy online you have to send it in and wait months for it to get fixed. Buy it from a retailer and you can just take it in and get it fixed. Its a warranty thing.

I have had many computers........ which brand you pick is not that big of a deal but HP and Compaq are definitly more reliable and have the best customer service. Dell and Gateway were banking on the online ordering and are now struggling to be in the retail market. Gateways have this funky thing about not supplying restore disks, call them and they say they don't have such a thing, call some more and it appears magically. Again whatever you do buy it in a store. And as an aside Toshibas are great machines as well.

Nowdays the $600-$800 laptops will do all that you want and if you decide you need more adding more memory is cheap and easy which wasn't the case once upon a time.

Whatever you pick, enjoy your new computer as that is always a fun time getting it just right for you! Ever have a question... well email me.

On a Mac, shift/administration/3 takes a image of the reveal screen. in case you press shift/administration/4, you may click and drag over the section you want; the image is taken once you launch the mouse button.
