static electricity could be a problem depending on where you live and the kind of environment you are working in. if you work with computers professionally, i mean opening up the case and touching the components inside the computer, it might be good to buy a antistatic mat. but if just for your own needs, you can be safe by working away from carpet and stroking the metal chassis inside the case to discharge the static electricity before touching components. it could be a big problem if you touch a component and you give off static electicity, it could destroy the component, even sweat could potentially destory a component.

It doesn't pose a problem as long as it doesn't touch the sensetive items in the computer. The computer itself is grounded and by itself shouldn't be harmed, but when the internals are exposed and you send a static electric charge to specific parts in the computer, they can be destroyed.

I used to get all nervous when building computers, static electricity wrist strap and all.

Now I just sit on my couch, feet on the carpet, grabbing at parts and slapping them in. I'm still somewhat careful with ram and cpu's, but everything else.. meh.
