And if 80 wire cables for ultra ATA (UDMA) are backward compatible with 40 pin drives how can you 'make use of' 80 wires with a 40pin cable ???

Thanks !

Ultra DMA mode 2 will transfer data at about 33MB/sec.

The cable with the 80 wires still fits in 40 pins , because the 40 extra wires are just ground wires, hence you have 2 wires per pin.

You can use the 40 or 80 cable for cd - dvd drives.

But for hard drives only the 80 cable.
