I need much more USB bandwith than my motherboard provides, but they're all the internal type connectors. How can I increase the bandwith and number of ports? (I have free PCI slots)

Get a multi-port PCI USB 2.0 card. You'll find 1 slot cards which offer a combination of internally accessible and externally accessible ports. 2,3,4 or 5 port cards are common. Check EBAY as these cards are LOW COST ($20-25). Make sure you get USB V2.0 ports (Faster). Also, if you find a card with INTERNAL ports, it is kind of nice since some new devices (like multi-card flash readers) mount inside your computer case, but they have standard USB connectors rather than pin headers). Internal is NOT critical, just a nice to have feature if you can find it. BELKIN has some nice stuff these days...

You you get an USB hub: connects into one USB port and having a number of USB ports for external devices. See Adaptec xHub for Notebooks at http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/index/Adaptec_xHub_for_Notebooks.htm

No. Some of these purported converter cables do exist, but they do not work for video, which is why you will almost never find them in any reputable retailer. Does your laptop have a slot for an expansion card like PC or EC? If so, then purchase and install a FireWire card. If not, then I really do hate to say you are out of luck.

Your best bet it to buy a PCI USB card. I have used these before and had decent performance from them.
