I'm a hard core gamer and programmer, I also do 3D modeling, I'm heavy into music and movies, and also heavy into business use, so I need a laptop with good memory, big hard drive, and high CPU speed, and a good video card. I would like a mac, can they do all this? Or should I just go with Windows?

I don't want to leave it on at night (nor plugged in) when I'm not using it. It's a Toshiba laptop. For reference, I have many things plugged into it (all USB....external hard drive, wireless keyboard/mouse, USB hub, printer...etc). Currently, I'm putting it into hibernation; it boots up and takes a few minutes. Stand-by boots up much faster. I'm just wondering, which is your preference and why? Which is better? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

my wife and I are considering a laptop computer. We've always been satisfied with dell, but recently we were told that there are much better computers out there with similar prices. This concerns me because I like to watch my money closely! Anyhow, they suggested "looking other places" but couldn't specify where. Here's what we'll be using it for -
Internet surfing - downloading videos, music, ipod stuff, ebay, photo sharing, instant messenger services, and possibly communicating with family via webcam. Burning movies and DVD's is important as well. One very VERY important note, I will also be attending college this fall for Architectural science, so the computer is going to need to be able to support AUTOCAD at least! Also save and keep drawings on it as well. I know very VERY little about computers. I know the higher the numbers. the better, but i don't know what to look for!

I have been looking for a laptop for a few weeks and I just can't decide. I have researched different types and because there are so many options, I am stuck between them. My budget is $1800-2000. I don't do any of that video editing stuff, I am more into music, pics, and watching/burning movies. Being able to easily take it anywhere is a must. My budget must also include the protection plans that they offer, an all in one printer (printer, copy, scanner), dvd/cd burner, a 1G-2G , and a router so that i can connect to the internet anywhere. And I don't want the laptop to look cheap.

I've recently bought a 1.5 Gigabyte (on 3 CDs) programme which I installed on my desktop. It's very resource heavy and runs much better on my Pentium CPU (rather than Celeron) Laptop, as a downloaded demo bore out.
I need to install the software from my desktop to laptop, but the CD/DVD player on my laptop isn't working.
I have loads of spare cables and a double ethernet & USB ported router, though I'm not networked.
10 points for the clearest, easiest solution!

I have a gateway laptop that is pretty much being scrapped for parts, and I was able to remove the flat panel lcd monitor. I was wondering, can they be used away from the laptop for anything at all? Like, is there an adapter of sorts that I can hook a VGA plug up to, or any way to use it as a second monitor for either a laptop or desktop? Or a way to rig it, so that it will? If I thought someone might buy it individually, I would put it on ebay. I mean, its just sitting here, and I hate to waste things...

P. S.- If by any chance, someone needs any gateway parts (besides the HD, and DVD rom, I claimed that!!) just email me. It is a Gateway Solo 1450

I am seriously thinking of buying one as it seems to be good value for money and has all the features I am looking for (dual core, 17" screen, 120gb, webcam and pre-installed Vista). I'll be using it for internet, word-processing, downloading music, videos, managing photos etc.

The pop up is "on line offers" and the 3 options are "Yes", "Remind me later", and "No thanks". Regardless of which choice I make, I can not stop this recurring pop up. I see it every 10 to 15 minutes.
Any thoughts?
