I just purchased an Acer Aspire 5570 notebook. It came with no o/s. I told the tech guy at the store to format and partition it because I was going to install winXP when I got home. When I turn it on, the screen boots to a DOS looking interface with mentions of Linux prior to the blinking cursos. I have no experience with Linux. What do I do to begin my WinXP installation. Thanks!

I would like to have a laptop which is user friendly. I want it to have a cd burner, usb connection and the place where you could insert the memory card. I would also want it to have ample memory and a rapid speed. Moreover, I would basically be using it for internet surfing, downloading and uploading, storing my documents for college, keeping my pictures and mp3 songs and the like. Im not addicted to gaming and editting pics is not one of my interest. But the my interest on the latter is possible. I also prefer Windows.

I'm not sure this is an appropriate question as I don't know if brand names can be named but so far we haven't had much success with a certain brand and would like other opinions

I would be using it for internet, digital camera, possibly a webcam, music, and word doc. I want to be able to research on the internet with multiple windows, play music and write an essay at the same time. I will be moving videos and music from another computer so it will need alot of memory because I do NOT want a slow comp.

If possible something that is light and easy to carry would be nice, but not necessary. What would you suggest I be sure that the computer have - and what is optional? I prefer windows because I've never used a mac before - or is it worth it to learn mac? I don't know if I would be willing to do that but offer your opinion.

Regarding price.. hopefully under 1150 as I am a student.
TIA.

My laptop charging port, as far as i can tell, has undergone metal fatigue over the course of my ownership. I do plug it up sometimes while using it on my lap, but usually it's on a desk while plugged up. The screen has a brightness adjustment. When plugged in the screen is brighter, when unplugged it is darker again. So I go through these bouts of a flickering screen because of the problems with the charging port. Sometimes it goes for a long time and my battery dies without my knowing. It's annoying. My best buy warranty doesn't run out for 8 months (Performance Service Plan). It covers "dust, heat, humidity, daily use, failures due to normal wear and tear, power surges, no-lemon guarantee" and covers "Full parts and labor". I've heard horror stories and would like to know if anyone has had problems with this companies warranties? I'm going to take it to Best Buy over the summer just in case there is a delay, so it woun't interfere with school.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I am a student taking Digital Photography and would greatly appreciate some advice. For Me...I find Mac's not as user friendly as PC's. I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers...I know there supposed to be better and all...but switching from one to the other gets a bit annoying for me. This is not my question. Keeping in mind that I prefer PC's...what should I be looking for in a new laptop? I like the idea of being able to check your images on-site to ensure you've got what you need. Burning the images to DVD is also a bonus to free up my memory cards but, I also need enough memory to do the odd Photoshop retouch as needed. I know Photoshop uses allot of memory.

Well...what do you think? I'm all ears--so to speak.

I'm pretty technologically challenged. I've decided on buying a laptop but I have a few questions regarding internet.

How DOES one get internet on a lap top? I've heard stuff about wireless cards. What are wireless cards? Are they cards you insert into your lap top and they act as modems, giving you internet? Or do these cards catch internet signals from other internet users (kind of like a router)? Is there a way to have your own internet connection on a lap top, without using anyone else's?
