I would be using it for internet, digital camera, possibly a webcam, music, and word doc. I want to be able to research on the internet with multiple windows, play music and write an essay at the same time. I will be moving videos and music from another computer so it will need alot of memory because I do NOT want a slow comp.

If possible something that is light and easy to carry would be nice, but not necessary. What would you suggest I be sure that the computer have - and what is optional? I prefer windows because I've never used a mac before - or is it worth it to learn mac? I don't know if I would be willing to do that but offer your opinion.

Regarding price.. hopefully under 1150 as I am a student.
TIA.

Here is my simple advise { i have suffered a lot because I am an student, programmer, gamer and also a net junky :(( }

Few things you should know :

Portability is a huge factor, laptops whether you think you are going to use it a home or campus, you need to carry it around with out having to walk like FRANKENSTEIN so that there is no damage to it in the bag. So Dell is out of the question as under 1150 dell will give you something soft and mushy.

Performance and customization is another factor. Buy something that can be customized to your needs later on when you have more money. Base performance must be good as this is what satisfies the user at the end of the day.

Battery consumption must also be less as you might have classes of 4 or 5 hours straight and having the battery down is simply unacceptable.

GO WITH :
( 1 ) Toshiba Satellite A105 series notebooks. This are pretty powerful and strong. But not ultra portable, just portable.

(2) Acer TravelMate 4400. Pretty portable and good for long battery life.

(3) HP DV 9000z ( $949 ) , This would be just perfect or you.

Coming in under 1150 is not a problem.

Pick your brand, it's up to you. HP, Dell, Acer would be my recommendations.

Start with the cheapest laptop they have, upgrade the RAM, upgrade the Hard Drive, then upgrade whatever other features you want. If you're going to be using it on the go alot (ie not plugged in) make sure to get upgrade the battery and maybe get an extra. That may be a bit expensive.

I would recommend leaving some money to buy a wireless mouse, external speakers, a laptop bag or backpack, and a USB hub.

As for Mac vs. PC, I'm a PC guy myself. I'd wait another year to use Vista if possible. There are compelling arguments for all the possibilities. You should use what you are comfortable with, so I'd say stick with Windows.

Also, if you are a student in college, check to see what software you school provides or sells. Usually, you can get things like Windows, MS Office, and AntiVirus like Norton or McAfee for GREATLY reduced prices.

Just go to www.newegg.com for a laptop. They have good prices there with low shipping costs.

I think this notebook would suit your needs. It has dual core, 1GB memory, around 5.3lbs...
