The laptop can be left on for days. BUT, if you have the battery in the laptop with the charger connected.. this is horrible for the battery. If your going to leave your PC on for days.. take that battery out!
Desktop PCs: I leave mine on all year. I actually read somewhere turning it off and on is bad for the power supply in some cases.. but whichever, I've had 4 PCs and no hardware issues besides a harddrive failure(been using computers for 12 years now)
Graphic card lagging? What game are you trying to play? Check the game requirements. Maybe your laptop isn't as powerful to play the game the way you want it to play..Also download latest video card drivers.
Upgrading? no clue for laptop.. never tried... sorry!
good luck,
Dominick

I think it is very bad to leave your laptop on for a long time. This is because laptops have smaller fans, and are more compact. This creates less air circulation and less cooling. Don't leave your laptop on for a long time especially if you are running a program that uses a lot of processor (CPU) power. It would be different if it was a desktop. A desktop can stay on longer without damage. Still, you shouldn't leave any computer on for more than a few days!!

I wouldn't recommend you to leave your laptop on for a long period of time. Here are my reasons:
1. It wastes your electric
2. It wears your laptop hardwares (because of the heat)
3. It might be a potential fire hazard (but rarely)
Same rules apply to desktop computers
You cannot upgrade your laptop's graphic card. Manufactures made the their laptops so compact that you cannot really do much with the laptop. Try to upgrade your ram, it might help with the lagging.

Yes is bad is HDD will wear out quicker and PSU. But it should go in to standby mode on its own. As for your lag it could also be lack of memory. Does it lag during games or movies?

Its not a labtop. its a laptop. I would shut it off. Laptops run hotter than desktops and there is no reason to leave them on if they are not in use.

It's ok to leave your lapton on for long periods of time as long as you have a screen saver. This is to prevent screen burning. It's also perfectly to leave your desktop on all of the time, I do that for mine.

desktops you can leave running for months on end....notebooks tend to get hot though and that's never a good thing.
you can run it over night for sure but try to find cool down periods if possible....unless it's under warranty and then who cares....that's what the warranty is for

Energy consumption is the key. If you don't place'em on "hibernate mode" (which is stand by)---then it's gonna add to your electricity bill.
Keeping laptob on will use up your battery charge unless you hook it up with the AC outlet.
