Well, as has been said, you'd need an XP CD, and unless you're willing to download it illegally (link#1 - I am not condoning or encouraging this, but it is an option to consider), you'll need to buy it (link#2).

Edit: This is, of course, assuming it's not new enough that you could return it for a refund and buy one with XP on it (you can find plenty on ebay, and also on newegg.com, tigerdirect, and others).

I do have one unsolicited alternative suggestion, in case you don't want to shell out $xxx or steal $xxx worth of software - try out a completely free, community supported operating system. If this interests you at all, try downloading the Ubuntu live CD (link#3) and burning the image to CD - in order to burn an iso CD image in Vista, you may need to download a utility (link#4) because of the bugs in Vista's native cd/dvd-burning software.

What happens is, the CD will boot right into Linux, letting you try that out and see what will and will not work right out of the box. If you like it, you can install it onto your system from there, and if you don't, no worries - running a LiveCD doesn't change anything on your system unless you choose the "install" option.

Hope at least part of my answer helps you through this problem - I've toyed around with Vista Basic myself, and personally I don't see what anyone sees in it this early after it's initial release - usually no version of Windows has been worth mention until a year or so after release, with the first service pack, and even then it's really not that great.

Edit: Also, you can feel free to contact me through here if you need assistance, regardless of which route you choose to go down. Best of luck!

Vista. some people say Vista makes use of up plenty equipment ram. that's authentic. Vista makes use of those ram to velocity up the pc. Thats why there's no longer plenty loose ram. Xp wastes those loose ram doing no longer something. Vista is much extra like minded than XP than u think of it is. Vista hasn't any situation to me for a million 365 days already. Vista is faster whilst beginning utility and initiating the pc. some people evaluate XP because of the fact they're too used to XP or they're gamer. it type of feels vista is slower in video games by skill of two-5 fps. No massive deal. VISTa!

Yeah if you really hate it that much you'll have to buy XP. And you won't be able to buy a laptop from a store with anything other than Vista on it. My only recommendation is to return it for a refund and then buy one on ebay or something, cuz I'm sure there are some being sold.

I think the only way for you would be to buy some XP discs. You may hate Vista now, but you're set for the future. Once Microsoft fixes Vista up a little bit, it should be a pretty decent OS.
