laptop computer, or simply laptop (also notebook computer or notebook), is a small mobile computer, which usually weighs 2.2-18 pounds (1-6 kilograms), depending on size, materials, and other factors.

While the terms laptop and notebook are often used interchangeably, "laptop" is the older term, introduced in 1983 with the Gavilan SC. "Notebook computer" is a later coinage, which was used to differentiate smaller devices such as those of the NEC UltraLite and Compaq LTE series in 1989, which were, in contrast to previous laptops, the approximate size of an A4 paper sheet.[1] The terms are imprecise: due to heat and other issues, many laptops are inappropriate for use on one's lap, and most notebooks are not the size of typical A4 paper notebook. Although some older portable computers, such as the Macintosh Portable and certain Zenith TurbosPort models, were sometimes described as "laptops", their size and weight were too great for this category.

That easy! A laptop is what you call the top of your legs when you sit down. A notebook is a small book with blank or lined pages, usually bound with a spiral wire.

They are literally the same. They have come to be interchangeable. The early laptops were large, and unwieldy and then the thinner more modern computers came out and someone started calling them notebooks because they were slimmer and lighter, but they are the same thing.

There is NO difference between laptops and notebooks, they are simply different names for the same thing. Different manufacturers call them by different names. I couldnt tell you why they dont just call them all the same thing. Perhaps just to confuse people.

It's against the law to put a notebook on your lap. 3-5 years in prison I think.
