Silicon wafers 12" in diameter, although some plants may still use smaller (8") wafers for some ICs.

They come in ingots, which are solid cylinders 12" in diameter and a few feet long of the purest crytaline silicon: 99.999999999% pure, from a company in Japan. Intel uses a special diamond saw blade to cut up the long "log" of silicon into thin wafers (about 2-4 millimeters thick).
