From what I am understanding, it sounds like you are wanting more storage space since you are saying you think you need more room for downloads. This will require a larger hard drive. If you do this, you will need to backup all of the files you want to keep first. When you install a new Hard Drive you will start with a clean slate.
Not to be condescending, but since from the wording of your question it appears that you don't fully understand what you are doing, I would advise taking your laptop to a professional for the work. You can tell them what you are wanting and why. They will look at your machine and be able to tell you what you need and then they can back everything up for you and set it all back up once they make the switch.
MEMORY, as you called it are sticks of chips called RAM (Random Access Memory) Your computer uses these to temporarily store data as you are running multiple processes. Increasing memory will speed up your computer, but it doesn't increase the amount of storage for your downloads.
A professional will be able to diagnose whether you are running out of storage space, need more RAM, or if your computer is running slow because of malicious programs that have been loaded on your computer because of P2P networks like Limewire, Kazaa, etc. Once they have examined your system they can recommend what your system needs to improve performance.

No, its not your memory. your need to get a better RAM Card.
A RAM card is , like what make every thing download faster and programs load faster. The Fastest RAM Cars you can get right now is 2gb but a 1gb is ok to. I suggest you also, get an porable or external hard drive. If you have music or big files you should put them or the external hard drive and it will make your laptop faster also. Take it in to a computer store and ask about updating your RAM card.
