They are the same thing. The term "Laptop" was used before all the studies that showed "Men who spend to much time with a laptop on their laps can become impotent due to the heat that is generated onto their "manparts"" The industry changed the name to "Notebook" to get away from that stigma. Laptops also kept being built smaller and lighter and more portable, so the term Notebook computer fit better, as many traveling execs began doing away with the desktop all together.

Spelliing!
Originally, when the first came out and weighed more than 8 or 10 pounds the were called LapTop because they are portable and instead of requiring a desk, you could endure using it on your LAP!
A million complaints later, about weight, to indicate, being lighter, the name - DA DA -DA-DA
Are you ready? THE NOTEBOOK!
Today, take your pick! On your lap or on your desk/floor PC or Laptop, some times Notebook!
