I've recently bought a 1.5 Gigabyte (on 3 CDs) programme which I installed on my desktop. It's very resource heavy and runs much better on my Pentium CPU (rather than Celeron) Laptop, as a downloaded demo bore out.
I need to install the software from my desktop to laptop, but the CD/DVD player on my laptop isn't working.
I have loads of spare cables and a double ethernet & USB ported router, though I'm not networked.
10 points for the clearest, easiest solution!

Take the DVD/CD player out of the equation - mechanical failure! No financial outlay considered FTB.

75% of these answers are redundant if you read question & clarifications. Networking or USB to USB cable (I have one) is only solution at present. Please simplify the former!! Thanks.

With your networking... I will presume that both computers are currently networked. (i.e. you can access the internet from both of them at the same time at your house) If so then simply do this.
1) Click the Start Menu
2) Click Control Panel
3) Click Network and Internet Connections
4) Click "Set up or change your Home or Small Office network
5) For the notebook click "ignore disconnected hardware" checkbox click next
6) Select the second circle "... through a residential gateway", click next
7) give your computer a name
8) IMPORTANT: Make sure you remember your network name (you will need to reenter it when you do this on your desktop)
9) Select turn on File and Printer Sharing
10)Click next and next again. Select just finish the wizard...
11) repeat steps 1 through 11 on your desktop
IN ORDER TO MAKE THE FILE ACCESSIBLE
1) Right click on the folder that contains the 1.5 gigabyte programme.
2) Click on Sharing and Security...
3) Click the checkbox "Share this folder on the network"
IN ORDER TO ACCESS THE FILE
1) From your desktop click Start Menu
2) Click My Computer
3) To the right... Click Network Places
4) From there you should see the folder that you shared (above)
5) Open the folder, right click the file, select copy, then select a place on your desktop to copy the file to.
6) Install!

there are ways to do what you need to do through networking the two computers the way to do a network is the couple the two computers up by ethernet cable, then use windows networking setup just follow the instructions in network setup,
But the way I would do it is go out and buy an external USB Dual layer DVD RW that way you can use it to install the program and after use it on both systems, the price these days they are very cheap, and do they come in handy so it will not be money wasted in the long run...
check the prices out below depending on where you live

Connect both PCs via ethernet to the router... then they are effectively networked.
If your router is a DSL router then it will have DHCP and will have allocated IP addresses to the computers. If it isn't, if it's 'just' a dumb ethernet router you may have to assign IP addresses to the computers.
If you don;t want the router involved, an ethernet crossover cable will work but you will definitely need to assign IP address details.
I suggest 192,168.100.1 and 192.168.100.2 with netmasks of 255.255.255.0
Then make a share of your CD drive on your laptop (you can do it in Windows explorer - right click the drive and pick 'sharing').
Then mount the share of the CD on the laptop (you can do that in Windows explorer too... from Tools -> map network drive).
Now, you've got a network accessible CD on your laptop and you can install on your laptop from it.
Solved?
Hope so.

You could purchase a USB data transfer smartlink cable at http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/usb_smartnet_cables.html.
Other than that, I would check the driver for the CD ROM in the laptop. You may need to download a driver for it.
If you can't buy anything, then you may not be able to perform the task. You may have loads of spare cables, but they may not be the correct ones. If you can't network them, fix your CD ROM, buy a large enough flash drive, etc. then we obviously cannot help you.

You can purchase a special cable that connects one USB port on one PC to the USB port on another. I've got one and it works perfectly. Cable I have comes from a company called Genelink.

It will depend DRM (digital rights management) of your software, but you might be able to copy the CD content to a USB thumb drive? Then install on your laptop using the thumb drive.
