I don't want to leave it on at night (nor plugged in) when I'm not using it. It's a Toshiba laptop. For reference, I have many things plugged into it (all USB....external hard drive, wireless keyboard/mouse, USB hub, printer...etc). Currently, I'm putting it into hibernation; it boots up and takes a few minutes. Stand-by boots up much faster. I'm just wondering, which is your preference and why? Which is better? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hibernate saves all your settings and volatile memory into the hard drive and your notebooks shuts down and turns itself off.

In standby mode, the notebook simply shuts down non essentials like the LCD monitor, hard drive and other devices the computer is still turned on but using absolute minimum amount of power.

If the computer is plugged into the mains and its important for me to access my computer asap, I use standby. But if I am travelling and need access to my computer fast, I use hibernate. This method saves your battery and extends its service life.

Hibernation actually shuts it down completely, but saves any documents or things that are open on the hard drive. Stand By just puts it in a low power mode, so I, personally, go with Hibernation. It still doesn't take that long, at least on my computer it comes up right away when it goes on Hibernation mode. My battery is really sucky, so it still runs down in Stand By, although not nearly as fast, obviously, than if its on.

definite and No reckoning on what you want? while in hibernation the computing gadget continues to be lively and the processor continues to be in use however the HD visual exhibit unit and so on and so on shutdown. So definite the existence of the processor will age quicker yet maximum chips are geared up for a 5 3 hundred and sixty 5 days existence span of being on 24/7 so in all honesty its no great deal. issues to evaluate, that is going to use electrical energy in hibernation mode do you pay for it ;) ensure the room has a hearth alarm! in basic terms incase.

Honestly, it is probably best to just turn it off at night. Is there a reason you would want to keep it on? Turn it off before you go to bed, and turn it on first thing in the morning. Not to mention this is better for your PC in the long run as it decreases the chance of the fan going out and your PC overheating from all the work it is constantly doing.

In addition to all the good reasons you already have received, the best reason for turning it completely off is 2-fold:

1. You are completely off-line so no one can get into your system because it's powered off.

2. Windows never has been good at recovering memory that's been used, so it's best to reboot in the morning and get all the full resources restored for your use. Plus, it re-initializes everything.
