There is a possiblility that you can recover some, if not all, of the data that was on the computer. But you have to ask yourself "how much is it worth?".

Data recover will easily run upwards of $150.

Your best bet would be to just reinstall windows 2000 on the computer. Though you will probably have to have someone do that for you if you do not have the restore disks that have all the drivers on it.

tell your son-in law to learn some very basic knowledge first.

It is not useful for you to have Windows XP since you have too small memory to make it work.

Ask your son-in-law to get that Windows XP out. I believe he is not able to do this, so the best is ask him to pay for that work in a neighborhood computer shop

you will need to get your cds u got w/ the cpu and reinstall win 2000 but you will lose ur data unless you want to pay a lot of money to recover.
