The rest of your memory is going towards graphics. On computers that have graphics cards with small amounts of memory, they often used shared memory in order to bolster its effort. This shared memory is taken from your RAM. specifically 64mb of it. 256mb of ram is a low amount to have on a laptop... you really should have 1gb but 512mb ram should be the absolute minimum. (especially since you have shared graphics memory)

It's possible that you may have bought a stick of RAM that is defective, or have a stick that has developed a defective chip. Here are a couple of pieces of software that might help you determine exactly how much ram you have.

Go to http://www.belarc.com and download and install their (FREE) Advisor. It's a small program and will only take a couple of minutes to download, install, and run. It will give you a very detailed report on the hardware and software in your PC. On the 1st page of this report you'll see an area called "Memory Modules" on the right hand side. This is a summary of exactly what you have in your PC. Take a good look at the report (I print mine) and understand as much as you can about your PC.

Also, go to http://www.download.com and search on and download and installed a little program called FreeRAM XP Pro. This program is also FREE. It will put a little meter down on the task bar in the right hand corner. This is constantly on and will tell you how much RAM you have left at any given time. It does use about 2M of RAM to keep this program running. This is a great little tool because it lets you monitor the RAM status when you launch and use various programs.

Hope this helps.

Actually to run GUI operating system need the video memory.....

BIOS provide this video memory from ram that you have installed

If you see 256-192 = 64MB

thus 64 MB ram is shared and thus now only 192MB is remaining for the use...Thats simple....

You can change thses settings from BIOS

when you start PC press DEL or F1 or F2 to swith to BIOS

then goto peripherals setting and configure the amount of ram you want to share....

generally 8MB is enough to run win XP..

OK Bye...

It seems that it will help you...........
