I had this very question when I bought my laptop, and the Intel advertising (on their website) doesn't help matters. The other commenters are correct in saying that the CPU and the Wireless technology are separate.
However, "Centrino" is a package deal that Intel sells includes the wireless capability integrated into the circuitry with the CPU (and some other components). This is specifically designed to be a low-power-consumption option for Laptops.
So, the answer is that if you have Centrino, you have 802.11 wireless built into the machine. The latest Centrino models appear to have at least dual-mode (802.11b/g) if not tri-mode (802.11a/b/g) technology to cover all the current wireless protocols.

Intel Centrino is a processor.
The Wireless Lan 802.11b/g is a wireless driver.
They are two different components of the computer and cannot really be compared.

The centrino is the processing chip that enable your notebook to run and carry out processes however with this brand it comes with added technology to allow wireless processes to be carried out efficiently.
802.11b/g is a componant in your notebook allowing it to become wireless. It pickes up signals from wireless networks and so allows your notebook to be connected to the network without wires. The main use for this is to connect to the internet without wires and so your free to roam around within a certain distance of your prefered network.
So these two componants are totaly different and have different functionsto perform in your notebook and so there is no question of comparing them.
If your notebook has Centrino technology it will most likely come with a built in wireless lan (or a wireless network card). So it's usful if you want to be using your internet access in a room different to where your modem is or its not convenient for you to have your notebook near the telephone socket (to which your modem will be plugged into). Otherwise you can get pentium processors or those from the the AMD range and to be honest with you all mid to high range notebooks come with a wireless card regardless of the processor. Even if you didn't have a wireless card and decided to have one later on you can buy kits to set you up.
Hope thats any clearer for you.
