I'd bought a new hard-drive for my laptop, just today.

When I did the partition, I could see 2 different partition, so I deleted one & had ONLY ONE partition of my hard drive (i.e. C drive showing the entire 40GB).

After that, I formatted the hard-drive & then installed the Windows XP. However, now when I reached the desktop, I can see TWO different drives i.e. "C" and "D" (I've one more i.e. "E", which is just my DVD-ROM drive).

Now, C=20GB & D=20GB. Is there a way, I could delete the "D" drive & have its 20GB transferred to "C" & have ONLY "C" drive as my ONLY hard-drive (rather than C AND D, at the moment), esp. without having to format & reinstall everything once again ???

I bought a used Laptop less than 6months ago from a guy on Craigslist. It is a Dell C600. The guy said it had bought Windows XP professional for it a few months earlier.
Well long story short after around three months I got the "not a genuine copy of Windows message" every time I turned on my Laptop.
I am looking to install Linux as I cannot afford Windows and cannot get a hold of the guy to replace it for me.
So I need some direction on how to remove Windows, I dont care if I loose all my info from my computer, not used for much but surfing.
Also if you have any suggestion on which version on Linux to use and where to get it from.
This computer id mainly used by my kids so a windows like distribution would be great.

THANKING YOU

I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop computer. I use it practically every 15 minutes for really small tasks like typinng Word documents and surfing the net. (By the way, I'm 15 years old and keep it in my room all day). I'm used to turning my computer on Standby when I'm done doing whatever I'm doing, but that gets a little annoying after the 99th time in one day. I keep my computer plugged into the power supply all the time. My computer is also usually kept in the exact same location all day long. Is there anything wrong with keeping my computer on for days on end? It would be much more efficient and convenient for me to just keep it on all the time. Would there be anything wrong with that?

Has anyone really ever recieved a free computer from some place on the internet just for answering a survey and ordering magazines or something like that? If so let me know how that worked out, please don't answer if you didn't. I only want to hear from the people who did get a computer. Thanks

I would think this is a pretty common problem and that the solution is always the same. The cord and plug-in appear undamaged but it just won't "click" and stay in. It still works but slides out without any resistance.

It is a Dell Inspiron 8500 series laptop with the plugin in the back.

The dog refuses to fix it, i tied showing him a dog bone then pointing at what he did. He just stares at it, I think maybe he isn't familier with this model. I know that he uses it cause my updates are always installed on tuesday mornings.

Thanks if you can help!

Does anyone know where I might be able to get me Dell Inspirion 8500 Notebook repaired? Apparently, my hard drive is dead as the computer will not turn on. After working with the Dell technicians for a few hours it was suggested that I mail the pc back to Dell. I've looked into other sources for repair but apperently no one knows anything about Dell hardware parts. Please help...serious responses needed!!!!
