your best bet probably is to try and get the other video card that was offered, for the inspirion 8500, the nvidia 4 4200; @ least it has 64MB VRAM;
may also be able to find a mobility 9600Pro and install it according to http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm
to be honest, even i, as a PC tweaker & upgrader would think twice ere disassenbling an Inspirion THAT much :-? :-?? :-/

Just because you can remove it, doesn't necessarily mean you can upgrade it. First, no off the shelf card is going to work in a laptop. Second, the upgrade card must come from Dell. Third, they probably won't ship it to you and lastly, they will probably have to do the upgrade for you. All this is presupposing that an upgrade card does indeed exist for your laptop. I'm not convinced that it does. But you will have to ask Dell about that.

According to your service manual you can change your graphics card. Do note that you need to get a laptop card and not just any off the shelf graphics card for a normal PC. Check with Dell for options on upgrading. You should be able to open the upgrade center with your service tag number and get specific information about the options for your laptop.
