I have a laptop with an on-board graphics card which is not very good, however I was thinking perhaps adding a normal PC graphics card via usb or something would be help.

No.

Graphics requre a lot more bandwith. That's why they have their own interfaces like AGP and PCI.

Unfortunately for you there is no way to get around your laptop's graphics card.

Sorry

As the feeling of the answers are going, it is a negative...and it's like the first guy said it does require alot of resources to get the most out of your video card, and unfortunately USB or Firewire would put bottlenecks on your graphics...also it'd be hard to find a motherboard that would send the images through your USB from boot as the USB during boot is used as an alternate source for only the hard drive...

It is possible though your options are extremely limited, don't listen to all the unsubstantiated No's above.. Currently USB2 is too slow for your needs. I will explain..

USB2 - 60mb/s maximum speed.
Average new VGA card - 20-40gb/s

Your onboard VGA controller would probably outperform the USB2 speed were you to connect an external card via it. Don't be disheartened it can be done kind of.

ATI, according to this article may be doing something in your direction. Its a very good idea, an external VGA card with its own power source.

There is also the Sidecar, though it may be overkill for your problem.

Keep looking you may find more options, though as i say they will be limited just not impossible.

There are no external graphics cards or anything close to what you are asking for. Laptop graphics cards are always integrated into the motherboard.

It is actually possible to replace your motherboard, but this is not for the inexperienced and you may have to source the replacement from the USA.

no way...
the bandwith of USB is not even a fraction of what you need for Graphics

in other words: the USB port is too slow. MUCH to slow
