Unless you are ordering a computer custom built to your specifications, which is usually very expensive, computers usually have the cheapest RAM in them. Unfortunately, it means that if the notebook has only 2 slots for memory and has only 512 Mb of RAM, then the chances are very good that both slots are going to be occupied with 256 Mb Simms. That's the bad news.

Depending on your computer and your needs you may not need to upgrade all the way to 2G of RAM. I was going to do the same thing you are thinking about doing, but I decided to try installing just 1 additional Gig first, and I left one of the 256 Mb RAM Simms in and its working great.

However, if you want to upgrade to the full 2 G all at once that's up to you. You can either pay the techs at the place where you buy your notebook to install it, or if you know what notebook you are going to buy you could visit the support area of the companies website and look at the online documentation. Usually, you can find out how to upgrade the RAM and you can determine if it's within your capabilities or not before you go to the store.

You'd have to request that, although I don't think that many laptops will go above 1GB.
If you request it to the shop, they can tell you if they have any in stock or know of any models that have the amount you want.

You probably won't be able to add more RAM to the laptop.

Get the Acer Aspire 5670. for $1400-1500 you get: 120 GB hardrive, 2 GB RAM. ATI X1400 graphix card (whoever i talk to is suprised to see one of those in a laptop.) it has intel duo core processor, bluetooth, wireless, and a 17in screen. But its not too heavy. oh it also has a camera and card reader.

If you get your Laptop from ' Toshibadirect ' then you can request it to them directly. They will let you configure/customize your computer according to whatever configuration you want. The cost factor surely comes into play. The higher lever configuration will cost you more.

Dell will also let you do this.

You make your request to the place you are buying from. This will be treated as an upgrade.

To the shop, but it will probably save you money if you bought a RAM chip and install it yourself.
