Is the state of the art in cheap laptops comparable to the state of the art in cheap desktops?

The biggest "problem" (in quotes because I assume you don't count slightly slower technology) is that if one component goes it may be that you have to replace the whole thing. Whereas if your fan (or whatever) breaks in your desktop, you can just replace it. (or get a better one!)

Nowadays, laptops have become quite powerful that many people replace their desktops with laptops. Why have two computers when you can have one that is small, light, portable and does pretty much the same thing?

Problems that can be expected with laptops include but are not limited to: heat (the more powerful, the more heat it generates), small keyboards (you're more likely to hit more than one key if you're used to full sized keyboards), battery life (demanding applications require more power which reduces battery life), theft (easier to steal), damage (being portable, you might accidentally drop it, break hardware and lose your data), high repair costs, limited upgradeability, etc..

There many advantages as well, portability being one of the best. It's nice to be able to take your computer with you and have all your information always.

With the decreasing cost in hardware, you will find, though not always that "state of the art cheap laptops" are actually more powerful than "cheap desktops". Look around. There are many choices.

The only problems that I foresee is that Laptops can be easily nicked and when they brake down, repairs are carried offsite. Apart from that, they are replacing PCs as home computers!
