The best way is nothing. Dont put any application on your computer except the one that you need the most. Its because lots of application using more resource on your computer. Generally, the most resource hungry is antivirus program.
But you can use avast antivirus! silent and fast detection.

The second one would be you photo editing software, especially Adobe Photoshop. If you just stay away from these application and make lots more space on your hard drive it would be more faster than average.

*dont try any software that claimed it can make your computer faster, theres no such thing. This is because i had tried them all and they sucks.

1) Put more RAM, (512MB or 1GB) . It will incerease the speed

2) new and better processor, in terms of Gig Hz of processing poer, but this will be more expensive.

3) If you dont want to spend any money , than make sure you have atleast 500 MB to 1 GB free space in your C Drive, that will do the job

4) Make sure you don't have any spywares which are eating your processig power, download free Anti-Spyware like AdAware, and intstall and run it once in a while. That might help to.

Depends on your computer, but usually RAM comes first, with a hard disk with some free space, and then the processor.
If you change the motherboard you'll have to change both the ram and the processor.

RAM is your best choice. Windows XP should have a minimum of 512MB of RAM. 1GB is recommended if you want performance and you are a Power User.
