Go to www.tigerdirect.com and go to their overstock/clearance sale section for deals on laptops. You can get the laptops listed in order of cost and you can look over the deals. I suggest that you look over each deal as the brands vary and so does the spec's of each laptop.
I just bought what I think was a steal. It was a refurbished Gateway. For less than $1000, I got a 3.0 GHZ, 100 G hd, 1G ram and a great video card. Based on the spec's of the other machines at that price, I got twice the speed and ram, 4 or 5 times the HD and the video card was way beyond what the others had.
Check it out.

San Francisco Cow Palace has 4th weekend of the mos electronic computer sales. very nice laptops sell for as little as 600 bucks. desktops as little as 300. however I find if you purchase the parts and build your own while buying in bulk at wholesale cost you stand to gain a far more profitable margin while at the same time getting exactly what you want in performance and appearance. Also contact your local manafactor and see what they have in overstock, they generally will sell to you cheap or offer you a deal whereas you help them get rid of stock and they cut you one hell of a deal.

Go for a second-hand machine.
Try buying a used one from eBay or somewhere similar. If you don't need the absolute latest version, check with a computer leasing firm if they sell the returned models.

you want quality, you have to pay for it. there is no cheap laptops. if you buy cheap laptops, you usualy have to add more memory to make it work properly, and that will cost you at least 250 bucks. dell is probably your best option. but customize one with at least 1024 mb of memory.
