My husband and I are looking for a good system to use for playing games such as Final Fantasy online. We do not have a fortune to spend, but we want something that can be easily upgraded. Dell always has great deals, but you end up speaking to people in other countries to get help. Emachines are just too slow. HP's are overpriced due to the name. So I have no idea what the best system is. If anyone has any hands on experience please let me know?

My brother-in-law is unable to boot his computer. When he presses the power button, the processor fan spins wildly (like it should when you first turn the computer on)... but continues to spin at high RPMs, even after the standard 2-5 seconds.

Nothing ever appears on screen -- even at the BIOS level, which makes me think the problem is related to the motherboard. The motherboard is only a couple of months old though, so I find it highly unlikely that one of its components has already failed.

Any thoughts?

Computer completely locked up...couldn't turn off Num Lock, Ctrl+Alt+Del did not work. Powered computer off via surge protector. Turned computer back on 5 min later. Monitor blank (black screen), has power, signal cable ok. CPU has power (power lights on). Scanner, printer, and CD Drives are all acknowledged when CPU is powered up. CPU is silent...no fans and harddrive not running.
This computer is a 6 year old Compaq Presario 7598. Factory specs are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dest_page=product&dlc=en&product=94528&docname=c00034150
Upgrades:
Added 512 MB RAM, new harddrive 6 months ago, new USB port card, external US Robotics 56k Modem, WinXP Home
The only other computer I have at home is my laptop and I have not tested for monitor failure yet by hooking it up to my laptop. I will be doing that this evening.

Last night my little sister accidently, hit the power button, and turned off my computer. When I turned it back on it went to the thing where you have to click on an icon(this is the thing before you can get to anything on your desktop). Mine was password protected. Well Im guessing I changed the password, and forgot it. I didnt know what to do, so I just decided to take everything off of my computer, by a System Recovery. Everything went fine in the System Recovery, but towards the end a box with a white x inside a red circle came up and said something about Win23. Not thinking anything of it, I just finished the system recovery. Then restarted. When I tried to get to my desktop all these warnings with the box with the white and red x's kept coming up, saying things like Desktop cannot be displayed, access denied. But if I just keep clicking them, it finally lets me do things. It even lets me on the internet, and do some stuff. I have no idea what this is, or how to fix it...

Hi! I am planning to buy a new PC. I'm a filmmaker and someone advised me to get a computer with duo processor. Thing is, they are a bit out my range.
Can anyone tell me if that duo processor thing is essential for movie editing or if a standard PC should do the job. I'm using the latter at the moment and it's been fine.
I would appreciate any advise or tips you might have, as I don't want to invest in something which won't make much difference.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I'm trying to by a desktop PC and want a fast one but don't want to spend a lot of money on junk. Here are the stats:
INTEL PENTIUM D PROCESSOR 805 WITH DUAL CORE TECHNOLOGY (2 x 2.66GHZ, 533FSB)
or
AMD ATHLON 64 X2 DUAL-CORE 3800+ (2.0 GHz)
or
INTEL VIV TECHNOLOGY WITH AN INTEL PENTIUM D PROCESSOR 930 FEATURING TWO PROCESSING CORES
or
Intel Pentium D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.8 GHz)?

Look, I don't know anything really about processors and am not at all familiar with AMD so PLEASE put it in idiot language so I can understand. If you need more info, let me know.
(Also, what is the difference between the AMD processors and Intel ones?)
