I'm trying to by a desktop PC and want a fast one but don't want to spend a lot of money on junk. Here are the stats:
INTEL PENTIUM D PROCESSOR 805 WITH DUAL CORE TECHNOLOGY (2 x 2.66GHZ, 533FSB)
or
AMD ATHLON 64 X2 DUAL-CORE 3800+ (2.0 GHz)
or
INTEL VIV TECHNOLOGY WITH AN INTEL PENTIUM D PROCESSOR 930 FEATURING TWO PROCESSING CORES
or
Intel Pentium D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.8 GHz)?

Look, I don't know anything really about processors and am not at all familiar with AMD so PLEASE put it in idiot language so I can understand. If you need more info, let me know.
(Also, what is the difference between the AMD processors and Intel ones?)

Amen to selecting the AMD. I have an AMD Athlon, and would go with the AMD every time, having had both AMD and Pentium. The clock speeds you quoted are comparable (2.66 GHz and (2.0 GHz). You won't notice any difference in speed. Just keep your hard drive cleaned up and the speed will be there. My AMD is 4 years old and still running like a top!

AMD always, but if you are comparing with the Intel Core Duo, have a look instead at AMD's latest Turion range (also dual core) - leaves the Intel dual cores in the dust!

AMD is cheaper, runs cooler and blitzes Intel in both speed and stability. Just waiting for Toshiba to take on the AMD CPU's as I really don't want to move to either Dell or HP for my notebook (my desktop on the other hand is custom built, so I get to use what ever I please)

AMD Athlon processors are much cheaper and almost as good as the Intel Pentium processors. So, I recommend you go for it. Intel's Core 2 Duo has been recently released and seems pretty much efficient, but AMD is no less.

Okay judging by the processors you listed, I think I have an idea of what your price range is. So, to put it in idiot language as you said: the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ gives you the most bang for your buck.

The difference b/w AMD and Intel is like the difference b/w Nike and Converse. They both make shoes, just a little different.

I prefer AMD. A little cheaper than Pentium and just as good if not better.

I would pick the AMD out of that list if it were me choosing.

Im not an intel fan, AMD are the it and the bit from my point of view
I have an AMD 3200+ 1GHz and it does everything.
The one im using is good for serious gaming, so im sure with the above AMD you wouldnt have a problem.
