First you have to determine what kind of graphics card slot is available on your computer. In order of speed graphics slots are..

PCI-express
AGP 8x
AGP 4x
AGP 2x
PCI

Once you figure out what kind of slot you have available you can go to a site like Toms hardware and look at speed ratings based on the video bus..

you should know how old your computer is and what type of PCI it has for the card slots. AGP 4x/8x or PCI Xpress. - PCI-e. at the end of the day what a gamer really needs is the best video card for his or her budget. The fastest, the SLI/Crossfire setups are the way to go if your computer can handle the sli (two video cards). But then there is a lot of heat generated and many other problems.
Since some of the new games cannot be played by the old cards you will need PCI-e cards for any current gaming.
the fastest memory is also required, at least 1 gig of system memory.
Do you want high definition TV as well.
You should go to www.tomshardware.com and there are many types and costs for video cards one of the popular ones being the Nvidia SLI duo cards. But a single card is better even for gamers.
Depend on your budget
I had an old 128 MB PCI card in one of my computers and it was great.
