Core 2 duo is faster the Pentium D. 3.40 ghz should be faster. I have the 2.13 ghz myself.

The overall performance of any Core 2 Duo will be better than the Pentium D. The Core 2s have faster internal bus speeds and more cache on die than any of the Pentium D chips. There is apretty big price different but there is a reason for that. Intel actually did bump the technoology pretty good between the 2 chips. The Pentium D is also not a true 64bit chip where the Core 2s are. Take a look over the comparisions on Tom's Hardware.

Well kramelop is right, except that whole thing about Pentium M is completely wrong. The name of the new technology is Core Microarchitecture and has absolutely nothing to do with the Pentium M. Anyway the new Core 2 Duos have faster bus speeds, more cache, and do more instructions per cycle, all ending up in much better performance.

Best I can tell the Pentium D is just a pair of P4 processors on the Chip. The Core 2 duo is based on the new Pentium M processor microarchitecture. The new technology streamlines cache usage and information processing so that more is done per processor clock cycle. Put a pair of the Pentium M or even the quad they are talking about and you will get a chip that is equally as fast or faster at a lower clock speed. Not to mention better power consumption.

it depends on your needs as a computer user!
intel core 2 duo will be 15-30% better if you are into animation, video editing, sound editing, etc. but if you are just the typical compute user, internet, email, word processing, your typical p4 will do just fine. actually since microsoft is releasing its new OS better make sure its compatible. (windows vista) or you can wait a bit longer and get a umpc... run a search for it, they're the new computer!

the duo is multicore. it particularly is fairly much like having 2 processors. yours is barely 0.5 the cost. Your computing device does no longer meet the standards. till the pentium d is likewise twin middle.
