God - more than just two things

Hardware:
Processor speed
RAM (size and write speed)
Hard-disc size(again, size and write speed)

Software:
Good anti-virus and anti-malware - malware and virus a common cause of system crawl.

System/Maintainance:
Regular Defragmenting
Cleaning out unused files/data
Trimming down unnecessary system processes/services

ALL these are important to maintaining optimal speed - there are other as well, but these stand as the most crucial.

Do frequent disk cleanups and defragments. I do these everday just before I shut down. One should do a disk cleanup everyday and defrag two or three times a week if the computer is used moderately. Try this. You may need to do a Disk Cleanup..and be sure you have all the boxes checked.... Defrafg your C drive or what ever is your main harddrive... Make sure you have selected the C Drive.... This is called a Disk Defragmenter... Go to : Start... programs.. accessories... system tools.. Do this often... E

1) Keep as less programs as possible to start during startup. Close down programs when not in use. For example you can safely close your anti virus, anti spyware, firewall etc if your computer is not in a network and when you are not accessing internet. Use your firewall wisely to allow disallow any programs to automatically access internet when you are online.
2) Use a good general purpose cleaning software like ccleaner to remove system junk, and registry cleaner like regScrubXP to clean your registry. And keep ample free space on your hard disk, by copying your data on a cd, and delete it from hard disk.

These two things will surely do a lot of improvement in the perfomance of your pc.

Faster hard disk and defragmentation. The hard disk is a bottleneck in terms of speed (other then the optical drives where in you dont have much of a choice) when compared to the RAM, CPU & Graphics card .
