Hardware - November 2007

I have an HP pavillion desktop and got the S.M.A.R.T. warning. Disk status: Bad. Failure is imminent. Immeidately back up your data. A friend and I tried installing a new hard drive but windows wouldn't load on it. It had a lot of debris covering the cooling fan on the back and figure that the motherboard probably fried. If I buy an enclosure for the internal drive and try to retrieve the data via usb, will it be forever dedicated to the enclosure? If the drive is bad, what are my other data-extracting options? BTW, the hard drive doesn't make any noise.

My daughter bashed some keys on the keyboard and has somehow managed to turn the whole screen upside down!!!!

After the paper has been scanned, what do you do if you want to change something on the paper--like the date or you mis-wrote a word and want to retype it then reprint the document, but on the computer, is this possible??? I DON'T want to make corrections on the original then rescan =)

My OS is Windows XP. The PC is a Compaq Presario (I think 5100 series) All of a sudden when I turned it on it gets to the Windows XP screen, then a blank purplish screen and then it restarts itself over... and over.... and over. I tried safe mode, I tried continue to last working condition. Nothing. It also is making a weird like wind up noise. I appreciate any help on this issue and thanks in advance. :)

just yesterday i purchased a new graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO, AGP). its seemed to install fine, and i was able to download the software from the CD, and then change the graphics preferences from the control center. But when i tried to play World of Warcraft, the screen came back to my desktop with an error saying "world of warcraft could not start up 3D acceleration".

it wasnt only this game, however...i cannot play any game that requires DirectX. I made sure i had DirectX 9.0C installed, and i tested it and everything.

one thing i found, however, was while testing it, the test failed on Direct 3D. it said "test failed at step 8 (creating 3D devices)."

i unplugged the graphics card, and tried it that way...and it works! world of warcraft plays...and there is no error code in Direct 3D, but with the card in, my games wont play.

help!

I removed my working hard drive from my laptop since it contained a lot of my pictures which i needed. I put it tinto a hard drive case and on connecting it via usb it fails to show up on my computer. However the usb port recognises it and when I go into disk management it shows me the drive which isnt formatted and asks me to partition it - I will loose all data should i do this... WHAT DO I DO ????

recently everytime i start up my computer it says it cannot find the ac adapter i don't know why i have it plugged in and then if i just skip the message instead of going into the boot menu or the bios like it says i can , when the OS loads it says the ac adapter is not there and my computer will run slowly and will not charge . also the OS i am running is windows vista i thought i should let you know even though it probably don't make a difference. thanks

i just bought a ATI radeon 2600XT and i want to return it cuz its not what i expected it to be. But the problem is that i already opened it and i read there return policy about only exchanging it if you already opened it. when printing labels using a mail merge, the first couple are clear, the bottom half of the page is so distorted it's unreadable.
only seems to happen with labels, and same thing with two different printers, so something to do with my Microsoft Word

the problem has come from nowhere - was working fine until yesterday!

i installed the new Call Of Duty 4 pc game on my laptop, it installed ok, but when it came to playing it, it came up with the message saying: video card or driver doesn't accelerate transform & lighting - video card or driver doesn't support UBYTE4N vertex data, does this mean i need a new video card? or do i just need updates.
The video card is a: Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family
Any ideas guys

if you had a processor running at say 2ghz that was "dual core" does that double the power so its running at 4ghz or dose it mean something different.
