Start - run - (or search in Vista) type MSCONFIG - go to startup tab, 95% of whats there does NOT need to be selected. The only thing you need is Video drivers, Norton/McAfee files, printer files and thats really it. Yahoo, msn, javasched, qttask, systray, adobe reader, and reminders or software updaters, fast find all that can be unchecked. If you are not sure what the file does, go the the website below and enter the file name and it will tell you, assuming its not spy/malware. Also, virtual memory should be 1-2x the size of yer RAM. So if you have 1GB of ram, yer swap file/virtual memory should be 1024-2048 in size. Also try not to save to much to the desktop, or large files there. Windows has to read all that during startup.

Also, REMOVE any Toolbar, desktop add on into Internet Explorer. If you like to have a search bar, upgrade to IE 7.0 it has a built in search, and you can control the search enginey ou use (i.e. msn, google, yahoo)

Also, if you dont use the service, DISABLE it, below is a link to XP/NT services and if they are legit and what they do, or if they were added by spy/malware. On average, 1/2 the services are not used by the average PC user.

Hope that helps some!!!

Simple as 1...2...3. Defrag your hard drive; uninstall programs you no longer use but not the ones which keep the system stable; always use the refresh feature when you're viewing the desktop; disable start-up processes of some programs that prolong boot-up; and always update your computer.

How slow is it now?

The first thing I would do is add more memory. Other things I consider doing are
- Remove programs that I do not need
- Stop services that I do not need
- Do not open too many programs at the same time
- Re-install Windows from scratch
- Buy a new and high spec PC

a funny question. But not really useful. Darkness does not travel. Darkness is no thing so it does not really have a speed. You could see it as the speed at which light goes away. Which would be exactly the same as the speed of light. I would say the speed of dark is 'a nice thing to philosophize about'

The best bang-for-the-buck upgrade is to add more ram. Then a bigger cpu if your board can handle it. I run 2Gbs of ram in my XP rigs and 4GB in my Vista rig. Also go into msconfig startup and uncheck the boxes for the progs you don't need starting up and running all the time such as messengers, quicktime, itunes, realplayer etc. If you run Nortons anti-virus swap to a one that's less of a memory hog such as AVG when your Nortons subscription runs out.

Increase your RAM, scan your hard-disks at times,
defragment your drives to fasten data access, lessen the programs or files on your desktop.
do avoid the start-up of programs at Windows start-up which are not used frequently

You can try:
*Use Disk Cleanup
*Defrag your computer
*Run error checking
*Do an antivirus check

And also remove any programs you don't use, and stop any start-up programs you don't need.
