if you know how to setup a network, or have an existing network, you can make a shared folder and copy the files you want into the shared folder and access them on the other machine.

other wise a really easy way is to buy a Belkin Transfer Cable. it's got a USB connection on each end, you just plug it in to both computers and it automatically installs the program on both computers, you open up the program and just drag and drop the files that you want from one computer to the other. it's really easy.

Vista has a "Files Transfer Wizard". To find it click Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Windows easy transfer.

Because I run a hum network, I have never used this wizard, but I have talked to others that have, and was told it worked fine. I believe that it requires a special cable.

You could also set up a small network. All you need is a router or a hub and a couple of cat5 cables. The Network wizard will walk you through the setup.

If you have a netwrok setup between the computers simply share the folder with the music by right clicking and going to sharing... on the Vista computer go to "network" and click the icon to your XP folder, you should see the shared folder in there, now you can drag the music over from the XP computer to the vista computer...
Note: this may take awhile depending on how many you have!

Just dump all your files onto an external hdd and transfer them that way. Don't make this complicated you don't need to network anything for this task.

Any reason why you couldn't do a LAN connection? Or just shove the old HDD in the new computer?
