Hardware - March 2007

I have a graphics card but there is no place to plug it into the motherboard. There is a place on the motherboard for that type of board plug, just isn't one there. Can I remove the one off my old computer and put it in that spot or am I Just going to have to buy a new motherboard. Or is there another way to plug my monitor into the computer.

Ok so my motherboard is bad and the Geek Squad said it would cost like $400-500 bucks to replace it. I would rather try to fix it myself by getting a new motherboard but I have no idea where to start..also since all of my data was on my PC, would I have to back it up before I start replacing the motherboard?

my dell pc keeps telling me PAGE NOT FOUND .I replaced all cables to modem, restarted. i get HTTPS ERROR connecting to microsoft.com,also HTTPS ERROR connecting to passport.net . whats up. can this be fixed?

There is this computer thats been working for 2 days that was built..... today i turned it on and it was fine and i ran prime95 just to make sure the temps are good and the cooling sufficient.. i left the room for 2 minutes and when i came back there was no signal to the monitor?.. what could the problem be.. the system WAS on and the fans running so the power supply is fine. Is it the graphics card or motherboard?/. what do i need to do.. help please/// thanks

Hello! I have two questions...

1. For better gaming performance, I now have a 2.40 GHz Processor and 1GB of RAM.

I have just bought a 3.33 GHz processor but should I return it and buy another stick of 1GB RAM?

So whats better for gaming, more FPS, for BattleField 2 and other games?
3.33 GHz + 1GB RAM
or
2.40 GHz + 2GB RAM

2. What is a processors Job? What does it do?

I have a 12 inch laptop that overheats when it's turned on for a few hours. I would like to purchase a laptop cooler but I don't know much about them (brands, quality, etc.) Do you have any suggestions?

PS. I don't want to spend too much money but I don't want to get a cheap cooler either. Basically something at a reasonable price that works well.

#1 to a mac os do i have to have a mac made computer, #2 is there any way i can turn my xp computer into a mac i like macs alot better... but we have this crappy compaq xp computer and i hate it i would much rather have a mac os.... the reason i ask that is b/c a friend said that he was able to download sumthing off of the computer some where that turned his computer's os into a mac's os (i dont know if it just made it look like it or if it was fully a mac)

I have windows xp home I have cleaned the inside, I have done a restore. Keeps restarting. I might be able to use computer for 1 hr. or 5 hrs. then shuts off. I changed the setting not to restart but it still restarts. Any help???????Thanks

well... i just bought an internal HDD... I can see the metal disk is exposed to the air , is it suppose to be like that?

if yes, should the disk face upward or downward when putting it in the case?? thx!!!

Whenever I plug a usb storage device to my laptop (Sony VAIO PCG 8L2L), a tooltip appears, reading "This device can peform faster. Please connect it to a USB 2.0 port....blah blah blah".....Why am I getting this message, and how can I solve it?From where will I get a USB 2.0 card, I guess which might solve the problem? Is there any sofware which will help me optimise the speed of the USB port?

Hi. I just connected a shiny new 500GB external hard drive to my xp-based laptop. Yay! It's like a new beginning, no? But I'm cautious about just dragging/dropping everythimg from the main drive (80GB) to the new external. Any advice would be appreciated. The new external is 7200rpm Seagate in a Wiebetech enclosure which they formatted for me at the local store. But they just sent me on my merry way with no extra software or advice, except to plug the monster in (firewire) and to always "safely remove hardware." I'm wondering whether I should just drag everything from MyDocuments onto the new external (how will this affect certain applicatons)? Also, what is that folder on the new external labeled ".Trashes" and the file called "._.Trashes" Can I delete these? Also, can I change the drive name? It's defaulted as "Jiggy" which I think i consider utterly nonsensical. Thanks for any advice.

The volume works for itunes and such, but not for the webpage. I tried to play some of my videos on youtube and the sound wont work. When I try to open up the thing to change the volume I get this:
