I`ve heard so much about doing damage to your PC if you aren`t grounded.
Thanks for previous replies, very helpful.

Forget metal pipes, sockets etc. The pc should be unplugged as there are voltages present on the board even when the pc is off. Any static discharge would have to be between the card and the pc. Normally a new card will be in an anti-static bag. Remove the card from the bag, touch the metal casing of the pc and fit the card. I always use this method and probably fit or remove cards 8 - 10 times a week and have never lost a card yet. If for any reason you can not install the card immediately, lay it on a metal part of the casing until ready, and then touch the casing again before handling the card.

Yes, you need to discharge your self but you need to discharge your PC aswell. Discharge your self by grounding yourself. Touch a pipe or any of the methods suggested. To discharge your PC you need to unplugg everything connected to it, EVERYTHING. Press and hold the power button (look at manuel for time to do this but 12 secs should do more than enough). You then have discharged your PC components and you will not electricute your self. You may now fit your card in using the methods described.

Try to avoid clothing like NYLON and stay true to clothing and materials like COTTON, nylon will create alot of static.

Do not worry about it to much though, follow these steps you will be fine. You have to be unlucky to bugger your pc up putting a usb card in!!! Though it is much better to be safer than sorry.

yes it is true that static can damage hardware if you touch the wrong part of a component
its more likely to happen to memory than other hardware but if you pratice safe handling of all hardware this will save damaging any of your cards, ram ect
the first method of discharging static is to simply touch the pipe on a radiator with both hand,s
as all radiators are earthed this is a excellent way to discharge static electricity
the second way is to purchase a anti-static wristband, these are avalible from all good computer shops and they are worn on the wrist and attached to the p.c case during installation of hardware
personally i would use the first method as its just as good and dosent cost you anything
i hope this has helped
good luck

Leave your computer plugged in as you turn it off. Then put some shoes on, touch the screw on a power outlet or light switch or another piece of metal, and then put the card in. It's highly unlikely any static will damage your computer.
