1 Gb should be enough if you will be running Xp on it. In case it comes with Vista you should consider 2 Gb. The HDD size should be at least 80 Gb.

Not really enough detail. When you say that you will use it for digital photos that throws a problem because if you are wanting to heavy duty editing say through photoshop then your requirements will be much higher than if you simply want to store and view ie 512mb to 2gb. The speed of the processor is as important a consideration because having loads of memory is not really that important if the processor is slow and can't handle the requests in the first place ie the memory will never get taxed.
512mb really is the minimum you should be considering. For editing photos a minimum of 1gb but 2gb would be much better.
The bigger the hard drive the better. 80gb minimum if you plan on keeping photos or other digital media on the laptop. If you intend to regularly move digital photos, music, etc to dvds then you could get away with less. 160gb would be great.

If your burning DVDs you'll want at least 1gig of memory, and depending on how many photos you have and their quality (the more pixels, better quality and larger file size) you'll probably want at least a 80-100gig hard drive, but as the saying goes "the more the merrier." If you are going to spend money to go beyond this the most important is memory because you can always buy an external hard drive that connects by USB rather inexpensively. On the other hand, memory cannot be added this way so it is more expensive and labor intensive to change down the road.

Most laptops nowadays you can get with 2GB of memory which should be more than enough for your needs. The only reason to go more than this would be for video editing or some online gaming that is a memory hog. As far as hard drive space it depends on what you're going to have on there, however 100GB hard drive is usually enough unless you're storing a lot of video files. Since it is a laptop it would be better to get too much than too little since they are not nearly as easy to upgrade as a desktop.

If you want to store the photos on your hard drive get the biggest you can get. If you dont get 2 gig of memory you may need to upgrade in the future especially if you use windows vista. Pentium M should be good for a laptop

2 GB RAM for videos and movies. At least 80 GB hard-disk. Processor to match. That much for Laptop. Why don't you go for desktop where you can get 160 GB RAM, SATA. Also desktop cost will be much less. Suggest have a projection TV, Sony, and good speakers for hifi home theater effect.

I would get at least 1gb of memory and 120gb of hard drive.
Why not use a usb jump drive to store some of your pics? Or put on cd/dvd for storage.

80gb is the standard nowadays on laptops but you can always buy an external one as big as you need for all your pictures, as for burning dvds, you only need a temp file for the films and then delete afterwards(about 7gb for that)
