Ok so my motherboard is bad and the Geek Squad said it would cost like $400-500 bucks to replace it. I would rather try to fix it myself by getting a new motherboard but I have no idea where to start..also since all of my data was on my PC, would I have to back it up before I start replacing the motherboard?

Well, the Geek Squad said they did a diagnostic first and said that the motherboard was bad. I had actually had the power supply replaced a few weeks ago and the geek told me that since everything is connected together the power supply could have done something funky to the motherboard but they wouldn't refund my money!!! :( I live in TX so where would I go to get second opinions? Or parts? I actually looked online and the motherboard for my PC was like $200.

First of all the Geek Squad is just that geeks that really don't know much of anything other than makeing money for best buy, and they over charge for simple things. I'm a pro Custom Pc builder, and have been in business for well over 15 years, and have never replaced a mother board for that much unless a customer requested it for some reason. If there is a Compusa there take it to them, they are good at testing things like this, and do not over charge people. If not go to a local computer repair shop and have them check it out, but I would say it is the power supply, they can go bad just as quick as you place them in some times. You need to state what type of board you have in another question and cpu, and power supply to get a close answer here. You may contact me if you have any questions on this matter would be glad to help.

you can't trust what those guys tell you. it won't cost no $400-$500 for a motherboard in your system. those guys are trying to rip you off.being you don't know anything about the computer, it could be as simple as the power supply. find a regular computer place that only messes with computers. the geek squad screws with more than computer and that is why they are so expensive. ask some friend that might know about messing with computers. have them test the power supply out and see if it is getting power. if it is the motherboard, find out exactly what brand and model it is and buy the same as what you have now. it can be a bit trick putting a processor in the motherboard if you're not careful. other than this, it is really easy to replace a board. the HDD and other hardware should be fine. what state are you in. you might get someone close to you the fix your system alot cheaper than getting ripped off by those frigin geeks.

I agree with DrHouse.

Get a second opinion before spending your cash. Just because they are the Geek Squad, does not mean they know what they are doing.

Besides if it was a laptop, which it probably is judging by the quoted price, the person you spoke to did not do the actual diagnosis. It was sent down to one of Best Buy's service centers and they often do not know what the heck they are doing.

I cannot tell you how many laptops came back with an Incorrect diagnosis when I worked for them. They don't even let their Geek Squad techs touch laptops for hardware issues.
