I do not like change! I think I like my computer just the way it is with my original windows xp home edition. Are there alot of you who feel the same? Wonder what we are really missing out on by not getting the newest ideas out there?

I have a Gateway 700SE. It currently has 256mb pc800 rdram. I'd like to add more, but I remember the tech guy saying it has to be installed in pairs. I'm thinking there's like four 64mb cards in there right now, so I'd have to pull out 128mb to add any more.

How do I know what memory to buy? Will anything with pc800 rdram work? Can I just get two 256mb cards, and add to two of the 64mb cards that will be remaining?

Also, I need to replace my hard drive. It's currently an 80gb 7M Ultra ATA hard drive. How do I know what will work as a replacement? I'd like to go with larger than an 80gb if possible.

Thanks for all your help! I hate feeling ignorant! :)

I tried the PC speaker mute in the volume control, and that only muted the speakers. I want to turn off or turn down the built in speaker that plays the beep on startup in older PC's and the sounds in DOS games. I tried to play a DOS game on my laptop and the speaker is too damn loud. How can I turn this off?

I just got my computer less than a year ago, about 10 months to be exact and it already says VIRTUAL MEMORY LOW. My other computer said the same thing, and it was all down hill from there, so I ended up buying this one. Why is my new one doing this already? They are both Emachines.

Personally I think these babies are sweet, 150 dollars for a laptop isnt bad. So it doesn't come with much storage or windows, I would take a hand crack over them any day. Am I the only person that would actually want to buy one?

I have a Compaq Presario 1245 Laptop, and I just recently installed a new harddrive, formatted it, and was going to reinstall a windows disk. The system boot fine, and allowed to go into the setup fine, but there was a problem with the Cdrom tray being loose and shakey and not reading the disk. It was just a missing rail, that goofy me forgot to put back in....Anyways, I took out the Cddrive, fixed the problem, so far so good. However, now it will boot into the setup, but thats about it. Otherwise I get a Boot Disk Failure message. The CD doesnt open, and when go and manually open it, and insert the disk, it doesnt even spin. Its just dead, like its not there at all. It shows up in the BIOS, and lets me select it to boot from. So, Im thinking its just a wiring problem, like its not plugged in all the way, but everything looks fine. Could this be a HD problem? Will a boot disk failure cause the cd rom to not even work at all? I tried booting from floppy too.....nothing.

Everything is just unbelievably slow and it's really annoying.

If I minimize something, it takes a long time and has to load everything. I heard changing my theme to XP Classic speeds it up a little but XP Classic is REALLY ugly and I don't feel comfortable with my computer anymore if I use it.

I am running Windows XP Pro. I have 128MB ram, 1GHZ PROCESSOR.... uhh. yeah.

Please, I need help speeding it up.

I'm looking at buying either a Western Digital, Seagate or Maxtor.
The Maxtor is an external (I want external), but the others are IDE (I think that this means it is made for inside the comp...?) Anyways, with the Seagate or WD I would get an external case and put it in myself.
To answer this question, don't worry yourself about price, I've found some pretty sweet prices, but rather, WHAT IS BETTER and WHY?

Cheers heaps!
