I'm not one to jump quick either but I downloaded it and wanted to double check that the disc image wasn't corrupted and my activation hack worked ok. Turns out, it's not half bad. I got it set as a secondary boot option right now and there are some bugs evident depending on what software I'm trying to run but all in all, I boot into it once every couple of days.
ps. the new poker game in vista beats solitaire anyday

Many new innovations come with Vista........but also a great many bugs. I didn't change to XP for the same reason until I was convinced the Microsoft had taken care of the problems, a little time after the sp2 came out. So it will be (at least with me) with Vista. I'll wait until I am satisfied the problems with Vista are solved or at least do not effect me. As it stands now I have a half a dozen programs that do not play nice with Vista and Microsoft says that it'll be a few months for these issues to be cleared. My next computer will be a Mac with Vista on the Windows side once they clear up the problems.

Stick with Windows XP Home on that computer. You aren't missing anything. At some point when you BUY a new computer, you will get Vista. But don't rush into it. READ the Reviews, and learn what version is best for you.
If you really want the new stuff, you won't be picking Windows Vista Home Basic. You will be picking one of the really cool versions that have the awesome graphics and such. Your poor old computer will only look silly to these awesome versions, and not the Home Basic version.
But don't put your old computer into the DUMP just yet. Let's save room in the dump for truly DEAD computers.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Vista is not a wise decision right now. It has too many flaws that will get fixed in the future.
When I finally breadkdown and get a laptop sometime down the road I'll just get it pre-installed. Hopefully by then it will be a decent idea.
Why the hell would you want to waste money on a new OS when you already have a perfectly fine one that does not chew up your memory like Vista will?

I never use new products when they first come out, it is normal that they have bugs and are unstable on computers that are a few years old, I go with the old saying that if something is not broke do not tryto fix it, I remember when XP first came out, full of bugs, as a matter of fact it seems like still part of running Xp is always downloaded cridical update and fix's.

I repair computers and install OP all the time. I run windows 2000 pro on my computers. i dont like change either. soon i will have to change because many of the new things I install for XP will not work for 2000 or ME. Vista will be beta for a while. its better to wait a year.

Vista has many problems, typical of new software. You would hope Microsoft would be more professional than that, but no such luck. Stay away from Vista at least until SP1 - maybe even SP2. Aside from slightly better security, there is no reason to upgrade, but there is good reason not to.

Meanwhile do try some of the Linux free distributions. If you can use windows you can use LINUX. Plus the software is free too. My favorite is UBUNTU. You can order a CD or download it. You do not have to install it to check out the features - it will run from the CD without altering your computer.

I sure as hell won't pay for anymore M$ crap. I've got XP, I only use when I absolutely have to. I will never, ever buy another M$ product, especially an operating system(If you can call it that).
I've gone to linux and never looked back. It's faster, more stable, and what else? Oh yeah, it's FREE!
