OK, first off, it IS indeed illegal for you to install mac os x on a non-apple computer. Yes, it is doable, but it is illegal. Notice here that I said "doable", not easy.

First off, the other posters are right, there is no mac components anywhere. You just have to buy them from apple. I don't think you can buy them from any old apple suppliers either, since they're going to refuse to sell it for you. As far as building your own computer, with the same specs of the mac book pro, you'd end up with a more expensive bill. So, what I suggest is, evaluate your computing needs, do you need a mac book pro? Or would you be OK with just a macbook? Heck, you might even be happy with a mini.

If you insist on doing whatever it is that your friend suggested (I presume this friend is a non-tech-savvy person? Does he know what os x is?) I suggest you start learning *nix. Learn the workings of UNIX, and learn bits of VMWare. Learn how to write drivers, and learn as much as you can about EFI, TPM, and of course, know your way around cryptography. Now, you're ready to try to hack mac os x to work on your computer. Good luck.

Oh, and on that note, if you ever need to update the software... don't... because you will need to hack the update... And of course, you will need to write your own drivers, too, so that your computer will work with the hacked os x.

You can't build a MAC. Apple does not provide the parts or proprietary secret to make it work. There are no MAC clones, since Apple does not support it.

If you want an Open architecture, then you have to endure the hardship of owning a PC. But building a PC is not cheaper than buying one.

Visit Staples and look at their Compaq tower only deal for under $450. It has DVD/Burner, 512MB RAM, 120GB Hard drive, 3GHz AMD, keyboard, mouse, lots of USB ports and Windows Vista Home Basic. That's a bundle that you couldn't build for the price. The only things that it DOES NOT have is a floppy drive and old fashioned Parallel Printer port. But GO MODERN, and scrap that old stuff.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

there is no way you can build a mac, apple does not allow that
the os cannot be found for sale, on torrent sites, or any other places, that is because apple doesn't make the mac CD's they install mac os for you when you buy their computer

depends... if you want a mac for the hardware then you have a problem but if you just like the mac os then build any computer that suits you and just make sure that it is all compatible

You CANNOT buy MAC parts off the shelf, you must go through an authorised dealer, who will build it for you!
Or buy SEVERAL old macs, and build a one from them!

you could build a pc and run the latest vmware and run osx that way or by a standard macbook if you only want osx than you could by a powerbook instead as they are cheaper.

It's illegal. Don't do it. However, for educational purposes, I will tell you of the OSX86 Project.
