Manufacturer does not matter!

What is inside and price are the only issues!

1. Dual Core CPU; Intel is the fastest, AMD is excellent with a better price.

2. 80 GB or larger hard drive. 7200 RPM over 5400. SATA over IDE

3. Not less than 1 GB RAM, 2 GB Better support for VISTA. 512 MB is an out right LOSER!

4. DVD burner no DVD ROM or CD drives.

5. Graphic card is better than On board Graphics. On Board depends upon the CPU, graphic card has its own CPU.

6. Same thing with Audio.

7. No XP Home, XP Pro is better than basic VISTA! Next year VISTA will be the absolute best bet! Right now, it has too many issues!

If you chose to buy the more advanced version and not the basic - go for it!

Do not get swayed by software give aways! Nothing is free, you pay for everything, either in quality or performance! You are buying a computer, not software!

Go to a sight that will let you configure your lap top! Buy what YOU want, at the price you want!

I bought a CompaQ, Presario V2312 US for $799 about a year and a half ago and it is turned on nearly 24/7. Same model is about $600 now.

It wasn't rated very high in Consumer Report as far as frequency of repair but I've had not problems (knocking on wood).

I don't know what you want to use your laptop for, but unless you need it for CAD or heavy gaming, it sounds like you are willing to spend a lot more than you need to.

Is it for homework, surfing, typical programs like you'd use everyday, (I use mine for surfing, downloading movies, music, photo work, word processing, ets and it works fine)

I think you can buy a Yearly Consumer Report book or join online for internet access (for about $20) and it will be money well spent. They give excellent advice on all electronics, including laptops.
