I just got my computer less than a year ago, about 10 months to be exact and it already says VIRTUAL MEMORY LOW. My other computer said the same thing, and it was all down hill from there, so I ended up buying this one. Why is my new one doing this already? They are both Emachines.

It may sometimes happen that the system give ‘out of memory’ messages on trying to load a program, or give a message about Virtual memory space being low. Possible causes of this are:

The setting for Maximum Size of the page file is too low, or there is not enough disk space free to expand it to that size.

The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shutdown. In the Virtual Memory settings, set to “No page file,” then exit System Properties, shut down the machine, and reboot. Delete PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive, if more than just C:), set the page file up again and reboot to bring it into use.

The page file has been put on a different drive without leaving a minimal amount on C:.

Possibly there is trouble with the drivers for IDE hard disks; in Device Manager, remove the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (main controller) and reboot for Plug and Play to start over.

With an NTFS file system, the permissions for the page file’s drive’s root directory must give “Full Control” to SYSTEM. If not, there is likely to be a message at boot that the system is “unable to create a page file.”

You can increase the virtual memory. It's just a setting.

To change virtual memory, right click on My Computer, go to Properties, then the advanced tab, then click settings under performance, then the advanced tab, then where it says Virtual Memory click change. I don't know how much you have it set to now because you havent said what it currently is, but you should never need to set it higher than 1500MB.

when you get the message Virtual Memory Low, it is because you are running/ or have run too many programs. Ignore these newbies who are talking about external harddrives, etc. All you need to do is reboot the computer and it will refresh your virtual memory. If you want to stop getting the message, just purchase some more RAM. Im sure if upgrade it to 1+GB of RAM, you should not see this message again for awhile.
By buying emachines you probably thought you saved money, and basically, nothing wrong with that. Although there's less RAM in the computer probably. Emachines is just a company that puts computers together, like DELL, IBM, SONY, HP, etc. They all buy parts from the same people. Corsair, Intel, Kingston, etc. etc.

its because they are Emachines :-P but try raising up the paging file size. To do this go to your control panel and then to system, from here click on the advanced tab and select "performance options, click on the advanced tab inside of it as well, at the bottom of this window you will see a "virtual memory" category click change in it. From here you can set it to custom and raise it to the recommended thats listed at the bottom or even higher. This does take away from harddrive space though, but will probably help some.

My compaq did the same thing (it was used but i am sure it was the same problem) go to Control Panel, System Information, then click the Advanced tab, then the first choice will let you set your Virtual Memory, click on the Advanced tab on this new screen, then on Change, and set it to System Managed Size. I hope this helps!

How well do you know your computer's innards? If it was me,
I would go thru everything and ask myself, "Self, do you really need this?" If self said NO, then I'd get rid of it. A lot of unnecessary junk ends up on our computers when we just HAVE to keep this or that. I'd start with removing all cookies,
temporary history/unnecessary files,defragment/unnecessary
programs you've downloaded (greeting cards takes a lot of
memory). Just be sure you don't delete any system files. If you had a program like Ad Aware, it would show you just what was unnecessary and let you get rid of it with one click.

To save your computer you need to get what is called an external hard drive. You can save things from your computer on the external hard drive because you attach it right to your computer. They can come with all kinds of different amouts of memory, the price for the least is abotu 100 bucks and you can find them at your local electronics or comeputer stroe. I got one about a year ago and it has saved my computer. Also try and clean upi your computer by cleaning up your C drive or defragmenting.

If problem is from the beginning , your memory card is in adequate. Otherwise some recently installed pro grammes, particularly games , are eating up memory.
