best thing to do when working on printers is to clean them up.Get all that ink out so you can troubleshoot.First after you are done w/ that I wound take a dry lint free cloth a wipe the data band.It runs from one side to the other behind the head.As for the knocking i would turn it on and when the head is setting up,open the top when the head is in the center of the track.Turn it off leaving the top open. Then you can manually move the head finding out what is knocking into.Could be that the belt has ink on it and is not stopping the head in time or is lose.Good luck.

it's telling you that it's trying to get in. sorry couldn't help it. now seriously. does it make a sound like tra tra tra tra or traaaaaaaaa traaaaaaaa. well if it does either of those it's going to be your gears that are making that noise. after that noise your printer frezzes? that's a common problem with those Lexmark printers. that's why I stay away from them. if you open the lid to see the heads and turn it off and on you will see that the belt that makes the printer heads move is the one making the problem. check the belt for any worn or broken teeth. you might have to get a new printer or have that one serviced. i wish I could help you in solving the problem but once they do that noise it's down hill for the printer.

good luck

Unplug documents cord and electric powered cord. Restart pc, plug them both lower back in the printer. Restart pc. Is the printer on a factor floor? positioned some thing below it and that my end the knocking. If that does no longer help, yell, "who's there".
